Lathe spindle and Z axis synchronization for threading

Postby jemzik » 11 May 2013, 07:04

Hi there

I am curious how to synchronize them together to get ability to thread on DIY lathe.
I guess that some type of encoder needed (closed loop system ) to read RPM on spindle and there is no need to phisical connection between z axis and spindle as on manual lathes.
What type of encoder you guys can suggest to use ? one reading per full rotation would be enough or more frequent reading needed for precision? How to implement closed loop on mk2 controller?

Thank you in advance!!!

I'm also writing an article about this.
